It is another very sad day for Cameroon as we lose yet again another great contributor to our music.
Noel Ekwabi also known as Papa Noel (Santa Claus), considered one of the best bassists in the world has left us today.
Displaying an early affinity for all types of music, this Cameroonian-born and Paris-based artist began as a child by teaching himself to play drums, percussions and the guitar.
A truly gifted musician and captivating performer, Noel was constantly offering his musical skills to renowned artists and has worked with many famous ones including Manu Dibango and Lokua Kanza.
Noel left behind an impressive recording and performance catalog which is noteworthy for its caliber and its diversity.
He was also the vice president of ArkJammers Connection Inc, a non-profit organisation gathering artists and music lovers from different cultures and from all walks of life, who are dedicated to spreading kindness and fostering intercultural dialogue through the unifying power of music.
You will sure be missed Papa Noel. One of your fans summed it nicely "Petit Papa Noel, comme tu vas au ciel avec tes notes par milliers, n'oublie pas notre harmonie" Don't forget our love!
Thank you for the music, we will miss you.

Today, January 17, 2025, I was heartbroken to learn of Noel's passing. His skill has always held a special place in my heart, and as I reflected on his incredible legacy, I couldn’t help but think about the talented Dibango who nurtured him. Over the years, I often found myself intrigued by the depth of the basslines but never took the time to find out who was behind that skilful playing.
In 2012, I noticed a different bassist taking the stage, and I mistakenly assumed that the previous bassist had either moved on to other pursuits or embarked on a solo career. It wasn’t until today, as I delved into the rich tapestry of Cameroonian music, that I discovered the bassist I had overlooked all those years—his name was Noël Ekwabi. A quick search online revealed the tragic news that he, too, had passed away, leaving behind a legacy of his own. It’s bittersweet to realize that two extraordinary talents are no longer with us. Noël and Dibango were truly remarkable musicians whose contributions will not be forgotten.
